"Each additional cup lowers mortality risk by 4%

 

As we are aware, tea consumption is associated with a reduced risk of heart disease, stroke, and premature death in general. Dr. Greger is a physician, New York Times bestselling author, and internationally recognized speaker on nutrition, food safety, and public health issues. The latest Dr. Greger’s article posted on NutritionFacts.org, he reports many of the scientific findings about the benefits of drinking Green Tea. 

 

1. “Using Green Tea to Help Prevent Cancer and Treat Cancer”

His latest article appeared on May 7, 2020, and Dr. Greger starts with “each additional cup of Green Tea lowers 4% mortality risk in general.” In this article, he mainly discusses the benefits for cancer prevention and treatment:
 

  • Those who drink a lot of Green Tea appear to live longer than those who drink less.
  • Drinking lots of Green Tea may also delay the onset of cancer; 7 years delay for women, 3 years for men.
  • Green Tea may be able to interfere with each of the stages of cancer formation: initiation, promotion, progression and spread.
  • We can get a nice “spike of antioxidant power” in our bloodstream within 40 minutes of drinking Green Tea, which may lower oxidative damage to DNA.
  • Regular Green Tea consumption can boost DNA repair.
  • Green Tea can cause cancer cells to commit suicide, apoptosis (programmed cell death) while leaving normal cells alone.
  • Green Tea consumption may reduce the risk of getting oral cancer by increasing the antioxidant power of our saliva and decreasing DNA damage.
  • When applied on the skin, Green Tea salve may help lessen the burns from the radiation treatment.
  • The topical application of Green Tea may protect cervical lesions from cervical cancer.
  • Potentially, Green Tea wrap may be beneficial for skin cancer treatment.
  • In the colon, Green Tea compounds are fermented by our good gut bacteria into compounds like 3,4DHPA, which appears to wipe out colon cancer cells, while leaving normal colon cells relatively intact in vitro.

2. The benefit of making a cup of tea  

We appreciate Dr. Greger’s reports as they are always based on scientific studies. Along with the scientific evidence, Dr. Greger also advocates the benefits of “drinking” Green Tea, not just the benefits of the Green Tea compound by itself. 

The above article reminded me of the additional benefit of making a cup of tea. He mentioned the delay in cancer onset among Green Tea drinkers, 7 years for women, and 3 years for men. This is an astonishing study, which encourages us to drink Green Tea as an everyday routine. The difference between 7 years and 3 years is huge. The report says, the difference is “potentially due to higher tobacco consumption by males.” This is a reasonable assumption considering this study was conducted in Japan, where more men smoke than women. I would also like to point out that, generally speaking, women are usually the ones who make a cup of tea for themselves and others alike in Japan–this fact may have played a role in the different outcomes as well.

There is no argument that the process of making a cup of tea itself can be therapeutic. It may not be every occasion, but Japanese men in the study may have “consumed” a cup of tea with little appreciation. From my memory, I can visualize that hard-working Japanese men are slurping a cup of tea which was made by their female partners or assistants while their heads were buried in other tasks. That being said, I also tend to zoom around slurping tea with a busy schedule. This could be a good reminder for us all to be mindful and appreciate the whole process when you make a cup. Next time someone makes a cup of tea for you, let’s take a few minutes and do nothing but enjoy your tea creating a special moment of appreciation.
