Best-Tasting Gyokuro Tea
Gyokuro, or “jade dew” tea, was created in 1835 by Uji tea farmer Kahei Yamamoto. Like matcha, gyokuro tea spends its last few weeks of growth in the shade, allowing it to develop higher levels of caffeine and chlorophyll, contributing to its sweeter and more umami flavor. Like the highest grades of ceremonial matcha, it comes from only the topmost leaves of the Camellia Sinensis plant, making it a rarer brew but no less enjoyed by people in Japan and worldwide.
Types of Gyokuro Tea for Sale
The differences between our three single-estate gyokuro teas come from their Japanese origins and the parts of the plant used in each type:
- Tea master:Â This is our classic gyokuro blend. We named this tea after our third-generation master tea farmer, Mr. Sakamoto, who farms tea for us in Kagoshima, one of the southernmost islands in Japan. His gyokuro tea only comes from the first harvest of the season, meaning the leaves have the highest levels of minerals, vitamins, and antioxidants possible.
- Uji:Â This blend is similar to our tea master’s, except it comes from Uji in the Kyoto Prefecture in Japan. This tea has a round and smooth, nutty taste.
- Karigane:Â Karigane differs from our other gyokuro brews because it’s made from the plant’s stems instead of the leaves. This tea has less caffeine than normal gyokuro and a sweet, buttery flavor. Karigane is often available at lower prices than other gyokuro brews.
One important thing to note is that gyokuro tea is also unique in how you brew it. You should steep the leaves in water at a lower temperature, about 140-175 degrees Fahrenheit, and brew slowly, like 90 to 180 seconds. The tea has a light, mild flavor, and over-steeping it in hot water can significantly alter the taste.
Benefits of Organic Gyokuro Tea
Today, gyokuro tea is thought of as one of the highest-quality teas available. While most green teas have some level of caffeine, the shading time for gyokuro tea means that it has more than most tea. This caffeine content makes it a great substitute for people looking to ditch their morning coffee but still need some caffeine to get through their day.
It also has a higher concentration of L-theanine, which, when combined with the caffeine, produces a more natural, calm alertness that leaves you feeling focused without being over-energized.
Gyokuro tea also contains the catechins green tea is known for, so it is an excellent option for people looking to benefit from antioxidants that protect against free radical damage, which can lead to cancer and many other diseases.
